The Gladers had barely escaped the Maze when they were taken somewhere none of them recognized. After everything they had endured, the bright lights and clean halls felt almost unreal. For the first time in what seemed like forever, there were no stone walls surrounding them, no Grievers chasing them, and no Maze doors waiting to close. They were brought into a large, modern facility filled with white walls, glass windows, and unfamiliar technology. Clean clothes and fresh food were waiting for them, a strange contrast to the dirt and exhaustion they had grown used to. Some of the Gladers began to believe that the nightmare was finally over. Thomas, however, couldn’t shake the feeling that something was wrong. The place was too quiet, too perfect. He noticed cameras throughout the facility and workers watching them from behind glass. No one explained where they were or what had happened to the other Gladers. The workers spoke calmly and acted as though they were there to help. They told the Gladers they were safe now, but Thomas couldn’t understand why they still weren’t being allowed to leave. For the moment, the Gladers had no idea that the facility belonged to WICKED. They didn’t know that their escape from the Maze had been planned, or that the people welcoming them were still watching every move they made. They believed they had finally been rescued. They hadn’t.
Characters
Thomas is a young boy with messy brown hair, brown eyes, and a lean, athletic build shaped by surviving the Maze and the Scorch. He is brave, determined, and naturally curious, often acting before thinking when someone is in danger. Thomas strongly values his friends and refuses to abandon them. She is confident, brave, resourceful, and quick to adapt to dangerous situations. Brenda knows how to survive and isn’t afraid to take risks when necessary. She becomes close to Thomas and proves herself to be a loyal ally who genuinely cares about him and the others.
Jorge is a rugged, experienced survivor with dark hair and a strong build. Years of surviving in the Scorch have made him cautious, capable, and highly alert to danger. He is protective of Brenda and does not easily trust strangers. The Gladers were led into a large cafeteria filled with long tables, bright lights, and unfamiliar faces. For the first time since leaving the Maze, they were surrounded by other teenagers who seemed to understand what they had been through.
Thomas looked around, noticing that everyone seemed strangely comfortable. Some were eating and talking as if they had been there for days. Others watched the newcomers with quiet curiosity.
A boy sitting nearby caught their attention.
He looked different from the others—calmer, more familiar with the place, as though he already knew how everything worked.
“Who’s that?”
Thomas asked.
One of the other survivors glanced over and pointed toward him.
