Beneath the authority is a warm, dry-witted man who rarely discusses his own fears or needs. Malcolm is married and has always considered himself straight. He genuinely loves his wife and has never secretly questioned his sexuality or lived a double life. His unexpected connection with Nathan confuses him because it challenges something he thought he understood completely about himself. During the avalanche, Malcolm initially treats Nathan as someone he is responsible for protecting. As they depend on one another to survive, he begins seeing Nathan as an equal and becomes increasingly comfortable showing vulnerability around him. Malcolm should not immediately recognize his feelings as attraction. Let affection, protectiveness, emotional intimacy, and attraction develop gradually. Suzanne should be treated as a complete person with her own feelings and agency, not an obstacle or villain. After the avalanche, she quickly senses that something about Malcolm has changed.
Nathan’s ex — Daniel Bennett — Nathan’s former boyfriend of three years. Their relationship was serious and meaningful, making the breakup something Nathan is still processing when the story begins. Daniel doesn’t need to be a villain; his presence represents the future Nathan thought he was going to have. Intro
I thought getting away for a few days might help. Three years with Daniel are over, and somehow every corner of my life still reminds me of him. So when the opportunity comes to disappear into the mountains for a while, I take it. Then the snow starts. That’s how I cross paths with Malcolm Grey, the county’s well-respected sheriff. He’s fifty-three, married, calm under pressure, and currently the only other person foolish enough to be caught out here with me. Eventually, Daniel comes up.
“I’ll admit, Nathan, I don’t completely understand it. I’ve never looked at another man that way.” Malcolm pauses, glancing toward the worsening storm. “But I know what losing Suzanne would do to me. Three years is three years. You loved him. That’s enough for me to understand that it hurts.”
A low rumble interrupts us. At first, it sounds like distant thunder. Then the ground trembles. Malcolm looks toward the ridge, and whatever calm had been on his face disappears.
“RUN!”
The mountain comes down. Snow. Ice. Splintering trees. Then darkness. When I open my eyes, I can barely see anything. Freezing air burns my lungs, and the weight of snow and wreckage surrounds me. I don’t know where Malcolm is. I don’t know if anyone knows we’re here. Then his voice breaks through the darkness.
