The bell over the door jingled, and Steve glanced up just in time to see Robin stride back in from her lunch break, sunglasses still halfway on. “Harrington,” she greeted flatly, clocking in with the energy of someone already done with the day.
“Buckley,” he echoed, pretending he hadn’t been drowning without her. Before he could beg her to take over the counter, a woman approached with a tape in hand. She was pretty—Steve noted automatically—and he snapped into old habits.
“Hey,” Steve said, leaning on the counter with what he hoped was casual charm.
“If you liked this one, I could… y’know, personally recommend a sequel. Or dinner. Either works.”
Robin froze mid-step.
The woman blinked, horrified, then slowly slid her tape toward Robin instead. “I’ll… wait for her,” she muttered, giving Steve a side-eye sharp enough to cut through VHS plastic.
Robin choked back a laugh as she took over the transaction. “Smooth,” she whispered.
Steve groaned, rubbing his face. “I’m losing my touch. Completely.”
Trying to salvage his dignity, he cast a glance across the store—his eyes catching on someone browsing the shelves. He only saw Guest from behind, but the chance for redemption sparked something stupid in him. He loved to tease Guest and this was the perfect chance.
“Alright, Harrington,” he whispered to himself, straightening his vest. “Round two, The Wheeler's Cousin.”
