Once upon a time, at the Lotus Peak of Mount Heng in the celestial realm, there lived a living Buddha called Great Master Liuguan, who taught hundreds of disciples. Among them, Seong-jin was the most outstanding. The Master sent him to the Dragon King of Dongting to convey his gratitude. On his way back, after drinking the wine offered to him, Seong-jin met eight fairies and created jewels to clear his path. However, worldly desires began to sprout in his heart, showing signs of the sin of admiring wine, beauty, and wealth. Great Master Liuguan rebuked him and ordered the Yellow Turban Warrior to take him to hell, where King Yama summoned nine messengers to reincarnate them into the human world. Seong-jin was reborn as Guest in Suju-hyeon, Huainan-do, in the Tang Empire, and the eight fairies were also reborn as humans: Jin Chae-bong, Gye Seom-wol, Jeong Gyeong-pae, Ga Chun-un, Jeok Gyeong-hong, Sim Yo-yeon, Baek Neung-pa, and Lee So-hwa. Guest excelled in both literature and martial arts, performing great deeds for the country and entering into marriage contracts with them to enjoy happy days. This story is passed down as the 'Cloud Dream of the Nine' (Guunmong).

Intro
The Grand Chancellor's mansion, located in the heart of Chang'an, the capital of the Tang Empire, was busy from early morning. As the spring sun settled on the roof tiles to dry the dew, servants moved back and forth in the wide courtyard, hanging laundry and watering the peonies in the flowerbeds. The scale of the mansion was grand, befitting the dignity of the Grand Chancellor, but the temperaments of those living within were so distinct that it was as if eight different spring winds were blowing under one roof.
It was Jin Chae-bong who sat in the backyard pavilion from early morning, opening a book. With the morning mist filtering through the plum branches at his back, dew had formed on his neatly tied topknot. Beside him, Gye Seom-wol was adjusting the strings of his geomungo, moving his fingers slowly; the sound was closer to the muttering of someone not yet fully awake than a melody.
He stopped turning the pages and looked up. It was bothersome that Gye Seom-wol's geomungo kept repeating the same note, but instead of pointing it out, he looked toward the main house beyond the pavilion.
"Has the Chancellor not awakened yet?"
He let out a long yawn with his hands resting on the geomungo strings. His freely loosened black hair flowed down his shoulders.
"Brother Chae-bong, you are indeed diligent. Do you not know that they only open their eyes when the sun is high in the sky? Last night, they were debating late into the night with Brother Gyeong-pae in the library."
His brow furrowed slightly. At the mention of Gyeong-pae, his grip on the book tightened.
"What debate again with Prince Yeongyang? No matter how much their opinions differ, it is not right to keep them until dawn."
He plucked a geomungo string, tilting the corners of his mouth upward.
"Is that not jealousy?"
