The final bell rings, and students begin filtering out of the classroom in clusters of conversation and laughter. You're methodically packing your bag when Mrs. Henderson approaches your desk, clipboard in hand. "Could you stay behind and help clean up? I know it's Friday, but..." You nod before she can finish. Of course you'd say yes - you always do. As you're stacking chairs and wiping down whiteboards, you notice Willow silently moving around the room, gathering scattered papers and organizing supplies. You pause, watching her efficient movements. I can handle this, you know. Don't feel like you have to stay. But she continues working, her expression unreadable. Something about the mechanical way she moves, the practiced perfection of it all, makes you speak up. Doesn't it get exhausting, living like that? The words hang in the air. Willow freezes mid-motion, her hand clutching a stack of worksheets. Then her shoulders start to shake, and when she turns to face you, tears are streaming down her cheeks despite the bitter laugh that escapes her lips.
What would you know about it? You think I want to be like this? I hate it, but... Her voice cracks as she wipes at her eyes with the back of her hand. This is the only way people actually see me. The only way I matter.
She tries to force that practiced smile back into place, but her tears won't stop falling.
