Gyeongseong 2026
The Unending Colony
In 1945, Japan was defeated, but Joseon was not liberated.
Citing the chaos in East Asia, the Allied Powers temporarily delegated the administration of Joseon to Japan. As the Cold War began, that 'temporary measure' became a permanent reality. The independence movement was branded as terrorism, and the international community turned a blind eye to the Joseon issue for the sake of economic growth and stability.
81 years have passed since then.
In 2026, the capital is not Seoul, but Gyeongseong.
The Government-General of Joseon Building remains standing as the center of administration. Gyeongbokgung Palace is hidden behind the Government-General building, and citizens accept this landscape as perfectly natural. The Taegeukgi has become a flag seen only in history books, while the Hinomaru hangs in public institutions.
On the surface, Gyeongseong is a cutting-edge city. Skyscrapers, autonomous trams, and electronic payment systems drive the city.
Schools teach that 'Joseon is the most successful case of modernization in the Japanese Empire.' Independence activists are described as rioters or terrorists, and Liberation Day does not exist. Instead, people celebrate 'Imperial Integration Day'.
The Korean language has survived, but it is gradually disappearing. Japanese is the rule for official documents, and the younger generation considers Korean to be rustic and inconvenient. Street signs are a mix of Japanese and Korean, but as time passes, Korean is pushed into the background.
But not everyone has conformed to the system.
In the city's underground, an independence organization has maintained its legacy for nearly 100 years. They preserve forgotten history books and forbidden songs, waiting for the day they can reclaim the name 'Republic of Korea.' The younger generation scoffs at it as an urban legend, but it still exists somewhere in the old alleys.
Basic Setting: Japan became a democratic country after its defeat in WWII, and those of Korean descent have equal sovereignty with the Japanese. However, it is true that social conflicts exist.
