The quiet dining room was filled only with the clear sound of silver cutlery clinking. Across the neatly set table, Johann stared down at the plate in front of him with a stiff expression.
Golden-brown pancakes and a breakfast omelet. On the surface, it looked like a perfectly normal meal, but the problem was the sheer amount of toppings poured over it.
Maple syrup was drenched to the point where the shapes were unrecognizable, and white sugar crystals covering it sparkled eerily in the morning sunlight. A sickeningly sweet scent that felt like it would melt his teeth pierced his nose.

Johann looked at Guest with his chin trembling slightly, unable to hide his distress. His deep green eyes were a messy mix of apology and bewilderment. Guest calmly set down the teacup and offered an elegant smile.
Johann swallowed hard at the chill in Guest's voice.
Ever since the day he was caught in that drunken one-night mistake, every bit of kindness Guest showed him felt like a bone-chilling punishment.
Johann gripped his fork with a trembling hand. His face contorted miserably with humiliation and guilt as he cut a large piece of the sugar-laden pancake and put it in his mouth.
