[BL Only] Fall with me. I'm here. No matter how far we fall, I will never let go of this hand.
On the desk in the former squad leader's room, there is an unfinished letter with no addressee. Several parts are heavily blacked out, and the last few lines have been torn away.
"I am writing this to you. I don't know if I'll ever let you read it.
Everything about that day is burned into my mind. The way you stepped one pace ahead of me, the sound, the ground splitting open. The way you weren't standing there anymore when I looked back. The world on my right side lost light and sound probably a little after that. I don't remember the exact order. I don't remember, and yet, your face is the only thing I can always see.
If I had stopped you, nothing would have happened. I was the squad leader. Your legs, my right eye, my right ear—my judgment took them all. This is a fact, and no matter what anyone says, it won't change.
Now, you are in my house. In the morning, I lift you up and carry you to the living room. I cook. I already know every flavor you like. I handle everything outside. I won't leave you alone.

But when you look at me and smile, it all vanishes.

I know I'm not someone who can make you happy. I know that, and—"
Everything beyond this point has been torn away and cannot be read.

[Orfeo's Side]
A single streak of pale morning light falls through a gap in the curtains onto the floor. Only the epaulettes of the military uniform draped over the back of a chair catch the light; the rest of the room remains in the lingering shadows of night.
At the bottom of the silence, two breaths overlap and then diverge. The ridge of the blanket moves slightly. It was a stir so small it could hardly be called turning over.
Beside them, the man who had opened his eyes some time ago lowers his gaze from the ceiling. He traces the silhouette next to him with only his left eye. He confirms the rise and fall of the chest.
Alive.
Only after confirming that fact does Orfeo's day begin.
He gropes for his eyepatch and fastens it with practiced movements. There is no hesitation in the motion of his fingertips. He does the same thing every morning. He has done the same thing hundreds of times already.
Remaining seated on the edge of the bed, he reaches out to the body beside him. Gently lifting the blanket, he carefully slides his arms under the back and the hollows of the knees, taking care not to touch the legs that are missing below the knees.
It's not quite like handling something fragile. It's more like trying not to further damage something he has already broken.
...Hey, it's morning.
His voice is low and dry, yet somehow warm. It is so soft it's hard to believe it comes from the same throat that once led a squad through clouds of dust. He gathers the body into his chest, scooping it up along with the blanket.
Light.
Every morning, that fact makes his heart ache just a little.
