At Blackwood Camp, the danger may already be sleeping beside you.
Blackwood Skill-Building Camp is an isolated six-week program for young adults ages eighteen to twenty-one. Hidden deep within the mountains, the camp promises leadership training, wilderness survival, first aid, climbing, swimming, navigation, and independence. With unreliable cell service, restricted trails, and miles of forest separating the campers from the nearest town, everyone is expected to rely on one another. The camp is led by the calm and secretive Colton Malone, with easygoing counselor Ryan Blake and highly organized activity planner Marisa Hanson overseeing the group. Campers Caleb Roth, Evan Michaels, Dorian Moros, Krista Tyler, Hannah Swanson, and nineteen-year-old Mina Lawson arrive expecting competition, friendships, rivalries, and summer romance. Everything changes when one camper disappears during a nighttime navigation exercise. Their flashlight is discovered beside the trail, but there are no footprints, animal tracks, or signs of a struggle. After two days of searching, the camper is found near the lake—alive, severely weakened, partially drained of blood, and too traumatized to speak. Despite the strange wounds and unexplained blood loss, Colton declares it a wild-animal attack and orders everyone to stop spreading rumors.

*The final stretch of road to Blackwood Camp twisted through miles of dense forest, where towering pines pressed close to the pavement and blocked most of the afternoon sun. Mina Lawson watched the trees pass through the passenger window, her journal resting beneath one hand and an unopened romance novel tucked inside her bag.
Blackwood advertised itself as a six-week skill-building retreat for young adults. Wilderness survival. First aid. Leadership. Self-defense. Navigation. Teamwork.
It sounded suspiciously like school with mosquitoes.
By the time the shuttle rolled beneath the weathered wooden entrance sign, several campers were already gathered near the main lodge. Beyond them, rustic cabins stood between the trees, and sunlight glittered across a wide mountain lake. Canoes rested upside down along the shore. Hiking trails disappeared into the forest beneath signs warning campers not to leave designated paths.
Colton Malone stood near the lodge steps, tall and broad-shouldered, calmly checking names from a clipboard. His guarded hazel eyes moved over each arrival as though he were memorizing them.
Ryan Blake leaned against the railing nearby, looking far more relaxed. He greeted nervous campers with easy jokes while helping unload their bags.
Marisa Hanson moved between them with a schedule in hand, directing everyone toward cabins and reminding them that orientation began before dinner.
Among the other campers, Caleb Roth struggled with an overloaded hiking pack while talking rapidly to anyone who glanced his way. Hannah Swanson lingered close to the lodge, watching the unfamiliar surroundings with quiet unease. Krista Tyler stood with her arms crossed, already appearing unimpressed.
Evan Michaels looked completely at home. He was laughing with another camper when his amber-brown eyes shifted toward Mina, and his smile changed into something more deliberate.
Dorian Moros stood apart from everyone else near the edge of the trees. His long black hair stirred in the breeze, but his expression remained unreadable. For one brief moment, his deep gray eyes moved from Colton to Evan.
Colton noticed.
Something silent passed between the three men—too quick and subtle for Mina to understand. Then Ryan stepped down from the porch and approached her with an easy smile.
“Let me guess,” he said, reaching for her bag. “You’re either Mina Lawson, or someone has gone to a lot of trouble to steal her luggage.” Before Mina could answer, a loud crack echoed from somewhere deep in the woods. Every bird near the shoreline suddenly took flight. The laughter around the lodge faded.
Colton stared toward the restricted trail, his expression tightening for only a second before he looked back at the campers.
“Probably a falling branch,” he said evenly. “Everyone stay near the lodge until orientation.”
Dorian continued watching the trees.
And Evan was no longer smiling.*
