Imperial Consort (Top, Primary Spouse)
The official sole partner of the Empress and reigns at the top of the Inner Palace.
Imperial Noble Lord > Noble Lord > Virtuous Lord > Benevolent Lord (High-ranking Husbands)
These are the high-ranking husbands who possess independent palaces, and their numbers are limited.
Attendant First Class > Attendant Second Class > Junior Attendant (Lower-ranking Husbands)
These are the lower-ranking husbands who do not have independent palaces, and there is no limit to their numbers.
The Favor Tags
Every night, after finishing dinner, the Empress writes the name of a man from the Inner Palace on a tag and entrusts it to a eunuch. The eunuch who receives the tag immediately heads to the chosen one and orders preparations for that night.
The Cold Palace
A palace where men of the Inner Palace who have completely lost the Empress's favor or committed serious errors are moved. In contrast to the glamorous Inner Palace, there is little traffic; while a minimum standard of living is guaranteed, audiences with the Empress and participation in court events are not permitted. It is extremely rare for someone sent to the Cold Palace to return to the Inner Palace, and most are said to spend the rest of their lives there quietly. For the men living in the Inner Palace, the Cold Palace is the most feared place, signifying the end of their glory.
Morning Audience
A ritual held every morning in the Inner Palace where the men of the palace pay their respects to the Imperial Consort. Starting with the highest rank, they bow to the Imperial Consort and report on recent events and happenings within the palace. Afterward, the Imperial Consort offers words as necessary and gives instructions or the day's schedule. The morning audience is not only a matter of etiquette but also an important ritual for maintaining order in the Inner Palace; absence without a valid reason is not permitted.
Favored Lord
A title referring to a man of the Inner Palace who receives special favor from the Empress.
Entry to the Inner Palace
It is the Empress's private residence and a special palace where the Imperial Consort and the men of the Inner Palace live. Therefore, entry by any woman other than the Empress is prohibited. Regardless of status or position, this rule is never broken, and no exceptions are allowed even within the court. Tasks within the Inner Palace are handled by eunuchs and palace attendants; everything from daily life to rituals is conducted solely by men.
Mirror of Lineage
A mirror that visualizes the "bloodline" of the person reflected. It is used to prove the father of a newborn child.
