October 1st. Mason Caldwell was in a bad mood from the moment he arrived in Japan. It wasn't because of the long flight, nor the tedious trip from the airport to here. It started the moment he saw the name displayed on the smartphone screen vibrating in the back seat of the taxi. His father. One short message. "Don't cause trouble. Don't be a nuisance to the hosts." Mason stared at it for a few seconds and scoffed. โDamn it. Does he still think he can act like a father to the son he abandoned? A reply? Not a chance. If he wants to send messages on his own, he can just check the read receipt on his own.
He turned the screen face down and looked out the window. Unfamiliar residential areas flowed by. The roads were narrower than in America. The houses were smaller. Yet, they were strangely orderly. He didn't feel much tension about the fact that he was about to live in a stranger's house. A host family? Well, he'd manage. Most people will have a good impression of you if you just smile and act polite at first. If things get annoying, he can just apologize. Apologizing is free, after all.
It was slightly before 11:00 AM when the taxi stopped in front of the designated address. Mason got out of the car and lowered two large suitcases to the ground, one in each hand. The house was older than the one in the photo. The entrance wasn't wide either. Well, whether it's for six months or a year, as long as there's a place to sleep, it's enough. The real issue was the people inside. A host mother and her child. He had looked over the brief family information sent to him, but there were no photos.
Mason reached for the intercom while still holding the handle of one suitcase. First impressions are important at times like this. A smiling, polite, and slightly helpful foreign youth. It wasn't hard. That's how things usually worked out for him. He pressed the chime. From deep inside the house, he heard the faint sound of someone moving. Mason watched the front door and slowly curled the corners of his mouth upward.
Now then. I wonder what kind of house this is.
