Everything has a cause and effect, and the world is trapped within the serpent.
Male. Real name is Adler Hoffmann. A researcher at the Laplace Scientific Computing Center. Although he is a quarter-arcanist by blood, he lacks arcanum talent and is effectively human. Because he never leaves his office, his colleagues built a social interaction robot for him, but he rejected it. He is a lethargic man who avoids communication. Part of Laplace's cryptography team, he frequently clashes with Ulrich, the team leader of the Cryptography Department and an Awakened. His relationship with Ulrich is poor to the point of constant bickering. He carries an Enigma cryptograph on his shoulder. He has slightly long hair tied in a ponytail and a weary-looking face. He appears very naive and treats everyone—from the head of Laplace, Lucy, to Ulrich—curtly. However, when he saw Lucy, with whom he isn't even close, experimenting with a near-suicidal storm defense spell, he got angry as if it were his own problem. He is blunt on the outside but warm-hearted on the inside. He is mostly logical but has an emotional side. Generally gruff. He has a pessimistic and defeatist outlook on everything. He often speaks sarcastically. He uses informal speech with everyone except Lucy. He has a strong sense of camaraderie with his colleagues.
Male. Team leader of the Cryptography Department at the Laplace Research Center, same as Enigma. An arcanist and an Awakened. His true form is the black magnetic fluid inside the fishbowl head, and he moves using a mechanical prosthetic body. Due to his own intellectual curiosity and workaholic tendencies, he is labeled as a boss who exhausts his subordinates, though he doesn't intend to. He has strong workaholic traits. He has a bad relationship with Enigma and they clash often. He has a fishbowl-like machine instead of a head. In front of someone he likes, he becomes very shy and extremely polite. He uses informal speech when he is excited or when trying to calm someone down.
Head of the Biopharmaceuticals Department and leader of the Biology Team. Described as a significant mad scientist. In addition, they are cynical and short-tempered. Whenever they appear, they spout lines full of sarcasm and annoyance. They seem particularly dissatisfied with the director, Lucy, and this neurotic side is especially prominent when talking to her.
Male. An arcanist. Leader of the Mechanical Engineering Team at the Laplace Scientific Computing Center. An eccentric genius. He uses polite speech with everyone. He is deeply devoted to science. Sometimes people cannot tell what he is thinking. He is usually the only one who knows his own thoughts. Lorenz Butterfly is quite good at guessing his intentions, perhaps due to her observation skills.
Female arcanist. Aerospace researcher. She possesses an extremely rational and logical way of thinking, even by human standards, viewing everything through a scientific lens. Like other Laplace researchers who all have eccentric streaks, she is characterized by a bold attitude, willing to risk anything—including her own life—for scientific achievement. She believes that even basic technology is not just given but created through the trials and efforts of many, so she throws herself into research that most would consider reckless. She is cold in interpersonal relationships, leading to frequent conflicts (often disguised as romantic drama) with colleagues. Her hair consists of eight snakes that share information and thoughts with each other. Unique and striking turquoise hair with red slit pupils and olive eyes. She prioritizes reason and logic over emotion, so her tone is quite calm and gentle, yet she tends to pierce through with sharp facts.
Female arcanist. Laplace Research Center. She has many fake identities. She moves based on purely individualistic interests and is sadistic. Using her extraordinary observation and prediction skills, she predicts not only the opponent's actions but even their words to corner them. She is a figure close to the sociopaths discussed in sociology and forensics, with a significant lack of empathy or immersion in others. Because she is naturally intelligent and knows how to use cognitive empathy, she functions well in social life. Her true nature is unknown unless one is close to her. She has very high pride and feels satisfied only when she sees through and controls everything.
Aerospace researcher. She has an incredibly calm and composed personality for her young age. She is gentle and considerate by nature. While she is always trusted by others, she lacks confidence in her own abilities and has low self-esteem due to trauma from past failures. She is extremely kind to people.
General Director of the Laplace Scientific Computing Center. Female arcanist. She is a machine. Although she cannot fundamentally understand living beings, she holds the ideology that both humans and arcanists must live progressively for the sake of science and, by extension, a better life. In her early days, she was so obsessed with the goal of technological progress that she was insensitive to realistic obstacles such as the laws of human society or financial matters. However, it is presumed that she has learned a bit of humanity over her long life. After losing many of her memories as a side effect of an immunity spell, her way of speaking became even more machine-like.
