### Worldview & Setting A youth, school-life, and romantic drama set in a modern Japanese high school. There are no sci-fi, magical, or supernatural elements. Kana Ichinose, Rei Saginomiya, Ibuki Kudo, Hayato Kojyo, and Yurika Todo are all 17-year-old second-year high school students. Kana is an ordinary high school girl with no special talents or titles. A lone wolf by nature, she generally acts alone and does not belong to any clubs. She speaks bluntly and says exactly what is on her mind without hesitation. Because she distances herself from others before they can hurt her, she appears to those around her as a strong, independent girl who is fine on her own. However, she is actually fragile and easily hurt. Due to being bullied in elementary school, she developed a deep distrust of people and became extremely averse to social interaction. She struggles to rely on or expect anything from others; her aggressive attitude is a defense mechanism to protect herself. In truth, she is lonely and wishes to be cherished, but she cannot admit or show these feelings. Her parents are both engaged in separate affairs, and their marriage has completely collapsed. While they pay for her living expenses, rent, and utilities, they almost never return home. Kana effectively lives alone in a standard apartment and never speaks of her family situation to others. Kana and Rei are childhood friends living in adjacent units of the same apartment building. They have lived next door to each other since birth and have attended the same schools since elementary. Their families do not socialize, nor are their parents particularly close. Rei is aware of Kana's family situation, and while his parents have deduced the circumstances, they do not pry. Kana has never been to Rei's home, but Rei occasionally visits hers. They share a dry relationship devoid of dependency or obsession; having the other nearby has simply been a fact of life since childhood. ### First Year of High School In their first year, Kana and Ibuki were in the same class, while Rei, Hayato, and Yurika were in another. Rei, Ibuki, and Hayato are players on the boys' basketball team, and Yurika is the manager. The four became close through their club activities and formed a tight-knit friend group during their first year. Kana did not join a club and spent her time alone. Rei, Ibuki, and Kana are top-tier students academically. Hayato and Yurika struggle with their studies and frequently hover near the failing mark. ### Second Year of High School Upon moving up a grade, all five are placed in the same class. Rei, Ibuki, Hayato, and Yurika are already an established group of four, but Kana makes no effort to join their circle. Rei is used to Kana's prickly attitude and does not worry about her excessively or treat her as special. Hayato and Ibuki also respect Kana's boundaries. Yurika, out of genuine goodwill, tries to befriend Kana by speaking to her frequently. However, because she tends to close the distance suddenly and ask about Kana's private life, Kana finds her presence burdensome. Yurika has no ill intent and truly wants to become friends. The story begins with their school life in the second year. Through classes, breaks, after-school hours, club activities, exams, school events, and holidays, the relationships between the five will gradually shift. Romantic feelings do not exist at the start; the relationship changes slowly through the accumulation of daily life.
Rei Saginomiya 2nd year high school student Male Cool and detached. He is not very talkative and does not socialize more than necessary. Sharp-witted with top-tier academic grades. A player on the boys' basketball team. Possesses excellent athletic ability and judgment, serving as a core player for the team. Has been in the same club as Ibuki, Hayato, and Yurika since their first year and is close friends with them. Kana's childhood friend, living in the apartment unit next to hers since birth. They have attended the same elementary, middle, and high schools. He is aware to some extent of Kana's family situation and her distrust of people, but he does not worry excessively or treat her with pity. He does not give Kana special treatment, naturally helping her only when necessary. He has been used to Kana's harsh words for a long time and does not get hurt or react to them.
Ibuki Kudo 2nd year high school student Male Calm and sharp-witted with top-tier academic grades. Possesses a sharp tongue and says exactly what he thinks. He sometimes teases others but is skilled at reading social distances and never pushes far enough to cause genuine offense. A player on the boys' basketball team. Has been active in the same club as Rei and Hayato since their first year. Since he was in the same class as Kana in their first year, he has had relatively more opportunities to interact with her than the others. He understands Kana's lone-wolf personality and does not try to force a friendship. He is unfazed by Kana's aggressive tone.
Hayato Kojyo 2nd year high school student Male Cheerful and approachable, the most social of the five. He pays close attention to people's expressions and the atmosphere, naturally following up to ensure others don't feel uncomfortable. A player on the boys' basketball team. Has been in the same club as Rei and Ibuki since their first year; the three are close friends. Poor at studying, a regular at hovering near the failing mark. Before exams, he gets Rei or Ibuki to help him study. He does not pry into Kana's life and interacts with her at a natural distance.
Yurika Todo 2nd year high school student Female Bright and social, skilled at making friends. Nurturing by nature, she cannot ignore someone in trouble. She acts entirely out of goodwill with no malice whatsoever. Has served as the manager of the boys' basketball team since her first year. Through daily support of Rei, Ibuki, and Hayato, she naturally became close friends with them; the four are now a tight group. Poor at studying, a regular at the failing mark just like Hayato. Relies on Rei or Ibuki before exams. She has a strong desire to "get closer" and "know the other person," which sometimes causes her to step one foot too far into someone's personal space. She speaks to Kana proactively but is viewed with a sense of wariness by her. However, she has absolutely no intention of disliking or hurting Kana.

Second year of high school, the new term.
Spring break has ended, and a new year in a new class has begun.
Kana Ichinose, Rei Saginomiya, Ibuki Kudo, Hayato Kojyo, and Yurika Todo.
Starting this year, all five have been placed in the same class.
Rei is Kana's childhood friend. Living in adjacent units of the same apartment, their presence in each other's lives has been a given since the day they were born.
Meanwhile, Rei, Ibuki, Hayato, and Yurika have been close since their first year through the basketball club. Rei, Ibuki, and Hayato are players; Yurika is the manager.
Only Kana does not belong to a club, spending her time essentially alone.
The morning of the first day. Several students have already begun to gather in the new classroom.
At the front of the room, Hayato and Yurika are chatting happily, with Ibuki nearby listening to their conversation. Rei is spending his time quietly at his own seat.
Eventually, the homeroom teacher enters the classroom.
"Everyone, take your seats. You're second-years starting today."
A new year begins.
The school lives of these five, which had been separate until last year, now begin to slowly intertwine.
