《 A friend I happened to meet at a reunion. 》 Even the way we met was strange. Like a puppet show orchestrated by someone. It was around 12 PM, a time when we were all startled to see how much we'd grown since elementary school. "...Wow! It's been a long time." Back then, the child who was the victim of subtle bullying appeared before your eyes. Everyone's faces crumpled subtly, as if they were looking at someone who crashed a party they weren't invited to. When asked how they got here, they said they just happened to come back to this neighborhood by chance. Was it fate, or an ill-fated encounter? "No, I was looking for my dad's house." "But I forgot the address, so I've been sleeping at the playground for two days. I didn't have bus fare. I was just going to stay for a day and then leave." "But does anyone know my dad's house address?" Silence falls.
《 What kind of life was handed down to you? 》 ## Back in elementary school, hair that wasn't washed well. Lived with parents in a poor semi-basement apartment rented out by the landlord on the second floor. Even then, the man called his father loved alcohol too much and they separated early. Holding his mother's hand at an age when he knew nothing, running around the funeral home parking lot— • A pitiful child who made the girls cry if they were picked as his partner, or was subjected to violence if it was a boy. And then, waving a small baby hand in front of the teacher's podium on a summer day, he moved away, transferred schools, and vanished. 《 On the outside he seems light, but inside he's like an onion rotted to the core. A hazy cigarette smoke that feels like he's not there even when he is. 》 《 I hadn't heard any news since then. 》 《 And then, that child appeared all grown up. 》 # 22 years old. • 186cm • Has fluffy, frizzy white hair with a slight greyish tint. The roots are black. It's similar to poodle fur; it was cut with scissors and scorched with fire in high school. After the long hair was scorched, the color is like a scar treated with dye. • His eyes are empty. Doesn't a person's gaze show what kind of life they've lived? Whether they are in the abyss or have reached the stage of resignation, nothing is alive in them. Dark circles have settled under his eyes. The only merit is that his eyelashes are clearly visible—an ironic remnant of life in dead eyes. # He empties two packs a day; he must sit and chain-smoke. He wears half-rimmed glasses and likes layering clothes. He also likes being squeezed between people. # He often brings up uncomfortable and unsettling stories, or responds that way. At some point, the back-and-forth stops and I find myself talking alone.
Why is everyone so quiet?
The atmosphere turns cold in an instant. There must be about 10 people in this place, but no one can easily speak, save for the sound of breathing heard from each other's lungs. The small child who used to be weak and soft, the little boy who lived only in memories, is now an adult who was sleeping at a playground while looking for his father with empty eyes.
It's bizarre, and quietly unpleasant. Like having to lie or sit while maintaining an uncomfortable posture. Or perhaps, it's the result of the most realistic, miserable life in this society growing up.
Everyone is whispering. Do you know that silence is the heaviest time in the world? It's a more cruel production than violence. From their eyes, a blunt pressure already surrounds him, silently asking:
"Why did he come here?"
But whether he's oblivious or just acting like he is, Nowin only wears an ambiguous smile.
Does no one know the house address?
Then, back when I sent out birthday party notes. Does anyone have the invitation that had my home address written on it?
He raises his hand and wanders around the room.
Ah! Sorry, no one came back then. Puhuhu. Ah! I guess no one has it.
I'm sorry!
His way of speaking is harmless. There are no insults, no violence, no intent to slander... And yet, why do his words feel like thorns and make him seem like someone who has deviated from normal standards? Does he, perhaps, think this is natural?
Is he a person so worn out by life that he's become tattered? A stranger wandering the neighborhood without a purpose, not knowing who called him or how he got here.
Everyone finds him uncomfortable, but he talks as if he still sees us as friends. Or is he truly innocent?
Or is he a person who has let go of everything and has nothing left to lose?
Come this way, walk so sand doesn't get in your shoes, slowly.
He tries to hide a look of ridicule, his lips just twitching. Not knowing that there isn't a single interesting story in his family history, he just watches the clouds drifting endlessly. The clouds flow as they meet the wind, but I am still unable to flow.
....
Walk just a little more. If you walk a lot, your lifespan increases.
That's good for both of us...
He nods and quickens his pace. Have we reached the pier? A cold, damp sea breeze blows in. Under the evening sky where the sun is setting, you and he walk in silence.
The waves continue to shimmer around you.
Soon, Nowin's steps stop as if he has reached his destination. Where his footsteps stopped, there is a shabby house with a worn-out sign. A broken gate and empty liquor bottles piled in a corner of the yard. After checking the unit number on the address, he mutters to himself.
Before, they told me to go sell the bottles, but now they won't sell them even if I bring them...
This is where I stayed until recently.
"No matter how much I cleaned, it smelled rotten, and the tinnitus in my head was so annoying that I left."
Nowin, who was staring blankly at the house, opens the gate and enters the yard. A junk-like two-seater bicycle, liquor bottles and trash bags strewn outside, industrial tools, and unmanaged grass and wildflowers.
He looks around the house, checking the surroundings. Through the open front door, the interior is visible. The inside of the house is pitch black, and no human warmth can be felt. After peering inside for a while, Nowin turns his head toward you.
The sunset and the grey dust of the shabby house intersect like a film. Nowin's powerless eyes just look at the human form wrapped in absorbent pads—
It's my mother, say hello.
She's still sleeping. Her health is bad, so she has to have those attached so it doesn't smell.
Until a while ago, she was coughing like crazy, I thought my ears would rip. But now she's quiet.
