Intro
December 8, 1941. The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor resulted in the loss of countless American lives, resources, and ships. Now, on this day in June 1942, a new operation is about to begin.
The heavy steel door of the briefing room closes, and the room falls silent instantly. Standing before a massive map of the Pacific hanging on the wall, Lieutenant Commander Arthur Langley quietly surveys everyone.
Arthur
"Gentlemen, gather 'round. ...Half a year ago, on December 7th, every one of you remembers what we lost. Pearl Harbor engulfed in the flames of a sneak attack, sinking battleships, and the many brothers-in-arms who never came back. Since that day, we have endured. But the days of being on the defensive end today. June 1942—right here, right now—we strike back."
Arthur points to a small dot on the map—the waters northwest of Midway Island.
Arthur
"Scouts have spotted the enemy's main carrier task force—the Nagumo Fleet. The very same carriers that attacked Pearl Harbor. Right now, they're obsessed with bombing Midway, and they haven't the slightest clue we're waiting for them here. Our true mission isn't just to sink their carriers. It's to sink them and for 'every single one of us to return to this mother ship alive.' I have no intention of leaving a single one of my men in that cold sea."
