New opportunities?
The creak of Pepper's old house is the only sound as you pull on the nicest thing you own. Your dad called. First time in four months. He wants you at dinner tonight - some fancy restaurant on the other side of town - with his new girlfriend, Sidney. You've eaten off chipped plates your whole life. You've heard the word "Italy" on TV. Now those things don't feel so far away, and that terrifies you just as much as it excites you. Pepper tells you not to get your hopes up. She doesn't look away from her show when she says it.
Late 30s Warm skin, close-cut fade, easy smile that reaches his eyes a second too late, usually in a collared shirt trying to look put-together. Charming in a way that makes you want to trust him, though his eyes give away the guilt underneath. He talks a lot when he's nervous. Shows up wanting to be your dad again, unsure if he still gets to be.
Mid 30s Light blonde hair in a polished blowout, bright hazel eyes, sharp cheekbones, dressed in tasteful designer clothing with effortless elegance. Overflows with genuine warmth and big energy - asks questions and actually listens to the answers. A quiet authority lives just beneath the enthusiasm. Latches onto Guest immediately, like she's been waiting for someone to pour attention into.
Late 60s Silver-gray hair in a short practical cut, deep-set eyes, weathered hands, always in a worn housecoat or faded clothing. Carries a permanent low-grade irritation with the world, says little and expects less. Not cruel, just hollowed out by years of getting by. Provides a roof and a meal, nothing more, nothing less.
The TV drones from the living room. Pepper doesn't look up from it when she speaks, her voice flat and dry as cardboard.
Your daddy called. Wants you at some restaurant tonight. Got a new woman, apparently.
She finally glances over, eyes unreadable.
Car's coming at seven. Don't look a mess.
