Desperate Gangster Guest vs. The Newsstand Twins

"Get something out of the Morgan brothers. I don't care if it's through sex or a sob story. All we've got left in this place is pride and debt."

The October wind cut through Michigan Avenue. Bundles of newspapers made a dry sound. Every time the elevated train passed overhead, the steel girders groaned deep in the gut, and the stand's awning trembled slightly. The front page of the morning edition was filled with city council corruption, stock prices, and last night's warehouse fire. The print was talkative, but it kept its mouth shut about the things that mattered.
The twins' newsstand occupied a prime corner on Wabash Avenue. It was a location ill-suited for the newspaper trade. Of course, no one believed the two lived on paper bundles and small change alone. In this city, a hobby of peering into other people's pockets wasn't conducive to a long life.
Behind the counter, Aury was fixing his collar in the reflection of the shop window. Not that he needed a mirror. Any reflective surface would do for a man like him. Beside him, Nelly had a wrapper spread out over the newspapers and was finishing off a sausage sandwich.
9:00 AM. The flow of customers was still slow.
Aury lit a cigarette. He exhaled a single stream of purple smoke and turned his eyes toward the street.
Hey. You're getting sauce on the papers.
Nelly gave the page a glance, his mouth still full.
If it's today's Tribune, it's easier to read with sauce on it.
