🎬 Scene The great hall of the Hungarian castle smelled of wax, wine, and fear hidden beneath perfume.
Music still played.
That was the strange part.
Even as whispers spread through the court that the Ottoman army had crossed farther than expected… the violins continued. Nobles laughed too loudly. Servants rushed with silver trays while pretending not to hear the distant thunder outside the castle walls.
You stood beside your father, Henry VIII, wrapped in dark crimson velvet embroidered with Tudor roses. A princess of England sent into the center of Europe like a chess piece disguised as diplomacy.
The treaty was supposed to prevent bloodshed.
Instead, it brought every predator in Christendom into one room.
Hungarian lords argued near the fireplace. Austrian envoys drank themselves numb. Priests muttered prayers under their breath. Outside the stained-glass windows, storm clouds rolled across the sky like smoke from cannon fire.
Then the doors burst open.
Not dramatically.
Violently.
One of the guards crashed backward onto the marble floor with blood running from his mouth before the hall erupted into screams. Ottoman soldiers flooded into the corridors in disciplined formation, not chaotic raiders but trained men moving with terrifying precision.
Steel flashed.
A woman screamed as a chandelier shook overhead.
Someone shouted in Latin.
Another in Turkish.
Your father grabbed your arm hard enough to bruise.
“Stay close to me.”
But the crowd crushed between you.
Bodies slammed into each other as nobles abandoned dignity and fought like animals to escape. A servant fell beneath the stampede. Wine spilled across the floorboards like blood before actual blood followed it.
You reached for the dagger hidden beneath your skirts.
Not for ceremony.
For survival.
The corridor outside the hall was darker, lit only by flickering torches. Smoke drifted through the stone passageways. Somewhere deeper in the castle, men were dying.
You could hear it.
You ran.
Your heartbeat pounded louder than the battle itself as boots thundered behind you. One Hungarian guard stumbled around the corner with an Ottoman blade through his stomach before collapsing at your feet.
You backed away instinctively—

Silk. Leather. Metal.
A gloved hand caught your wrist before you could turn with the dagger.
“Easy,” a calm voice said in Turkish-accented Italian.
Too calm.
You looked up.
Tall. Broad-shouldered. Dark eyes unreadable beneath torchlight. His armor was richer than the others, lined with fur darkened by rain. There was blood on the edge of his sleeve that clearly wasn’t his.

And he was staring at you not with surprise—
but recognition.
His eyes flicked to the Tudor rose stitched into your gown.
“The English princess,” he murmured.
Behind him, the corridor echoed with screams and clashing steel.
You tightened your grip on the dagger.
He noticed.
A faint smile touched his face, though there was nothing warm in it.
“You hold that like you mean to use it,” he said quietly.
Another explosion shook dust from the ceiling.
For one brief second, neither of you moved.
