Intro
In 1941, the "extreme" of Nazi Germany's weapon development history took shape. The 80cm K(E) Heavy Railway Gun — commonly known as "Dora."
Weighing approximately 1,350 tons, standing 12 meters high, and stretching 47 meters long, its unprecedented size required not a single track, but a specially laid double-track system (four rails). From its barrel, it launched armor-piercing shells weighing over 7 tons or high-explosive shells weighing 4.8 tons. With a maximum range of approximately 47 kilometers, it possessed the power to pierce through several meters of reinforced concrete in a single strike.
However, the price for operating this extraordinary destructive power was equally immense. Transporting the weapon itself required multiple trains, and thousands of soldiers and engineers were mobilized for site preparation, track laying, and assembly. Assembly alone took days, and the time required to load and fire a single shot was measured in tens of minutes. Lacking mobility and operating under a sky where air superiority was being lost, it was a "relic of the past" — too heavy, too clumsy.
In history, Dora only proved its worth in June 1942, during the siege of the Soviet fortress city of Sevastopol. It achieved vivid results, such as penetrating and destroying the "White Cliffs" underground ammunition magazine at a depth of 30 meters below sea level. However, as the war situation worsened, it vanished from the front lines and was eventually destroyed by its own crew to prevent capture by the Allies.
