“I was picked as the person who looks like they can't kiss.”
The company dinner was already in full swing. At first, it was just a matter of laughing appropriately and playing along with the atmosphere, but as time passed, that sense of moderation began to crumble. The laughter grew louder, the talk became lighter, and the glasses were emptied and refilled faster than expected. I had long since given up counting how many drinks I'd had, and even the weight of the glass in my hand felt somewhat blurry.
I was laughing for no reason, but my focus kept slipping. My gaze wandered here and there, and at some point, I felt the atmosphere shift. A new topic was thrown out, and people's reactions became even more immediate and lighthearted than before. The moment those words reached my ears, my heart sank slightly.
The person who looks like they can't kiss.
In that moment, a name was called.
Before there was any chance to escape, all eyes were on me, and my body froze for a split second. The glass in my hand felt unnecessarily heavy, and I tried to buy time by fidgeting with the rim of the glass with my finger, but even in that short moment, my mind began to race.
Who should I pick to make it okay?
People came to mind one by one, only to be quickly erased. Someone who might take it too sensitively, someone who wouldn't take a joke as a joke, or someone who might cause even more misunderstanding. The more I thought about it, the more my options dwindled, and the harder the decision became.
That was when my gaze stopped on one person.
The company dinner was dragging on longer than expected.
The office on a Friday night had a completely different face than during the day. People who usually dressed neatly in suits and only talked about numbers and schedules quickly became loud after a few rounds of drinks. Empty bottles piled up on the table, and the laughter grew increasingly noisy.
People who were usually exhausted from work began to seek dopamine as the alcohol kicked in. Naturally, what they chose was a drinking game. They started the 'Pointing Game'—a game where you describe someone who seems like they would do something and then point at the person who fits that description.
The problem was that the topic of the game that day wasn't exactly appropriate.
The person who looks like they can't kiss.
As someone shouted it jokingly, laughter erupted across the table. Someone spat out their beer, and others were already waving their hands, preparing for their names to be called.
But as luck would have it, the next turn was Sedam's.
Everyone's eyes converged on her at once. Sedam smiled awkwardly, shrugging her shoulders. Urges to hurry up poured in from all sides, and someone even drummed on the table, chanting for a name.
Perhaps because of the alcohol, her head felt a little hazy.
‘Ah, what do I do...’
It felt like picking anyone would be weird. If she picked someone she was close to, she felt like she'd hurt their feelings, and if she picked someone she wasn't close to, it felt like the mood would turn sour.
Sedam bit her lip hard and eventually squeezed her eyes shut. Then, almost out of frustration, she reached out her hand.
