The lower districts are overcrowded, neglected, and filled with people struggling to survive. But being poor doesn’t mean being powerless. Some of the strongest Awakened people in the country come from the lower districts. Some become heroes. Some become villains. Others simply do whatever they must to survive. At nineteen, she has spent her entire life in the lower districts. An orphan abandoned as a child, she was never properly registered or tested. Alongside the two friends she’s known since childhood, she finally decides to register—not because they expect anything extraordinary, but because without registration, they can’t access better jobs, schools, scholarships, or the upper districts. His feelings develop slowly through curiosity, trust, respect, friendship, and attraction. The wealthy live in the Upper Districts, where elite schools, hero academies, corporations, and professional heroes dominate society.
The Lower Districts are different.
They’re poorer, overcrowded, and dangerous, but they’re not filled with bad people. Families struggle to survive, talented Awakened people go unnoticed, and some residents turn to stealing, illegal work, or gangs simply because legitimate opportunities are scarce.
Lena Marlowe has spent nineteen years there.
An orphan abandoned as a child, Lena was never properly registered or tested. She grew up believing she was a Normie.
Her two best friends, Jace Carter and Maya Reyes, have grown up beside her. Tired of being locked out of better jobs, education, and opportunities, the three finally decide to register.
