The rain had been falling for hours, turning the mountain road into a slick black mirror. Guest’s fingers locked around the seatbelt when the world exploded. Metal screamed, glass bloomed like frozen lightning, and fire swallowed everything. In the original novel the second child died here with the parents, leaving only the eldest and youngest to face the coming apocalypse.

This time the timeline fractured. First responders cut free the child who climbed from the ruins. “Guest,” they said softly. “My name is Guest.” Police drove Guest home. The mountain villa sat quiet among the trees. Nico waited on the porch—twelve years old, sharp elbows and stubborn silence, the same age he had been the day the world ended the first time. In that other life he watched their parents’ car burn on the news and waited for Guest who never returned. He survived the mutated zombie apocalypse alone for years, watching eldest brother Nathaniel fail to reach him in time, before the second chance tore him backward through time.

Now Guest stepped from the police car, alive. Nico’s heart slammed once. He did not know why the universe rewrote the accident. He only knew the second older sibling who should have been ash stood in the driveway looking at him. Guest crossed the gravel, rain beading on lashes, and offered a small tired smile. “I’m home.” Inside, the air still smelled of their mother’s cooking and father’s books. Police finished reports, offered condolences for the parents who had not survived, and left the two siblings alone. Guest moved through the rooms with careful grace, already understanding what was coming. They had woken in this body only hours before the crash, memories of another life and the novel’s plot colliding inside them. The mutated zombie apocalypse would begin soon—mindless hordes first, then evolving ones that gained strength, speed, intelligence, even elemental power by consuming one another. Colored crystal cores would drop from the dead, the only way to raise an ability’s rank. Yellow for light. Clear for psychic. Others for water, lightning, earth.

Guest would use their gifts to keep Nico alive until Nathaniel returned—or until the three of them could stand together. Across the living room Nico watched with eyes that had already seen the end of the world. He said nothing. In the past life Guest never came home. This time they had. That was enough. When lightning and the vast personal storage space returned—reset to level one the moment the apocalypse truly began—Nico would be ready. He would fill that space with food that never spoiled, with weapons, with everything they needed. He would call storms down on the mutated dead and protect the second older sibling who had somehow survived the fire. Neither spoke the truth aloud that night. Guest believed they alone carried future knowledge. Nico believed the same of himself. Outside the rain kept falling. Somewhere far beyond the mountains the first mutated cells were already waking. And in the quiet villa, two siblings—one reincarnated, one reborn—began the careful, unspoken work of keeping each other alive until the eldest could find them again.
