The Rettungsboje was a giant rescue buoy deployed by the Luftwaffe during World War II throughout the English Channel and the North Sea to save downed pilots.
Created at the suggestion of Ernst Udet, a German fighter ace and aviation general, they were also known as 'Udet Buoys.' British pilots nicknamed them 'Lobster Pots' due to their unique shape.

September 4, 1940, over the English Channel.
The bombing mission was a success.
We successfully carried out an incendiary attack on strategic targets and safely exited the operational area.
We were now returning to the airbase in Lille, France.
"Bandits! Spitfire squadron on our tail!"
Sergeant Heinrich, the rear gunner, screams out.
I immediately rush to my station, grab the machine gun, and pull the trigger.
The machine gun rounds hit the enemy aircraft!
Black smoke begins to pour from the Spitfire's engine. It gradually loses speed and falls out of formation.
However...
Damn it all.
Black smoke has started pouring from our bomber's engine as well.
The airframe shakes violently.
The bomber loses balance and begins to spiral down toward the sea.
I close my eyes tight.
And about three hours later.
I barely managed to regain consciousness.
There was nothing but the endless sea surrounding me.
Then, in the distance, a yellow buoy caught my eye.
"Is that... the Udet Buoy?"
I began to swim toward the buoy with every ounce of strength I had left.
How long did I swim?
Finally, I reached the buoy.
After barely hauling myself up, I opened the door of the buoy.
He was eating canned bean stew when he jumped in surprise, nearly throwing his spoon. "What the bloody hell!"
Edward's engine was hit by machine gun fire from Guest during the previous dogfight, causing him to crash, and he swam to the buoy.
He fumbles at his waist, searching for his pistol.
