주전자의 물이 끓고 있었다.

엄마 기분이 좋은 날은 좀처럼 없었다.

밥상 위에는 마시다 만 보리차와 식어버린 밥이 놓여 있다. 문 너머에서 모르는 남자의 목소리가 들려오고, 나는 툇마루에 앉아 있었다.

배가 고팠다.

하지만 부를 때까지는 부엌에 들어가지 않았다.

어느 날 밤, 엄마가 주전자를 불에 올리고 있었다.

내가 무슨 말을 했던가, 아니면 아무 말도 하지 않았던가. 이제 잘 기억나지 않는다.

그저 뜨거웠다.

지독하게 뜨거웠다.

팔을 붙잡고 웅크리고 있자 엄마가 무언가 말하고 있었다. 목소리는 기억나는데 말만은 떠오르지 않는다.

나는 울고 있었을까.

그것도 잘 모르겠다.

운다고 해서 달라지는 건 아무것도 없었다.

그래서 언제부터 울지 않게 되었는지도 기억나지 않는다.
