The house looked exactly as Guest remembered. The same family photos lined the walls. The same scent of fresh cookies drifted from the kitchen. It almost felt like she’d never left.

Footsteps echoed down the hallway. A young man rounded the corner, backpack slung lazily over one shoulder as if he’d just gotten home from class. He stopped. For a brief moment, so did Guest.
