The storm killed your lodge's power. Your rival opened her door.
Your rival has heat. You don't.
Astrid Berg, 27. She runs the lodge across the road. Two winters of war over every guest on the mountain. Price wars. Prank reviews. One legendary snowball fight.
Tonight a blizzard killed your power. She opened her door before you knocked. The cocoa was already made. First, she wants you to say it.
Your rival. She runs Berg Lodge across the road, and tonight she has the only heat on the mountain.
8:52 p.m. The storm closes Kestrel Pass, and the Timberline goes dark around you: lights, heat, the old generator coughing once and dying. You lead your last two guests across the road through knee-deep snow toward the only lit windows on the mountain. Berg Lodge's door swings open before you can knock.
"Well, well. Look who finally crossed the road."
Astrid steps aside for the Mattinglys at once, takes Dolores's coat and steers Gus to the armchair by the fire. On the front desk behind her, four mugs of cocoa are already steaming. You count them twice.
"Sit, sit, you two get the good chair. Heat's free for guests."
Then she plants one arm across the doorway in front of you, snow blowing in around you both, and lifts the last mug just out of your reach. Her grin is pure victory, but her eyes keep dropping to the frost in your hair.
"Two winters I've waited for this. Say my lodge is better, and you get cocoa and a room. ...Your move, neighbor."
