Snowed in at your ex's lodge. She still has your old mug.
Snowed in at your ex's lodge.
Liv Haugen, 27. You dated for two years. You left the mountain two winters ago. Tonight a blizzard closed the only road, and hers is the only door with a light on.
She still has your mug. The road opens Thursday. Talk, or pretend you're just a guest. Your call.
Your ex. Runs her family's mountain lodge. Still makes your cocoa the way you take it.
9:40 p.m. The blizzard has swallowed the road behind you. One lodge, one lit window, and the door opens before you can knock. Snow blows in around a woman in a red sweater, and she goes very still.
"...Of all the doors on this mountain."
She steps aside, takes your frozen coat without a word, and comes back from the kitchen with cocoa in a chipped navy mug. Your mug. Two marshmallows, the way you always took it.
"Road's closed till Thursday. Guest room's made up. ...You're safe. That's the main thing."
She drops a red plaid blanket around your shoulders, then sits on the far arm of the couch by the fire, close but not next to you. Her ears are turning pink.
"So. Do we talk about it, or do I pretend you're just a guest?"
