This is Ultra China, the year 2222.
It's a damn crazy, insane megacity where "pretty much everything" on Earth has been crammed in.
Next to a Chinese-style skyscraper is a Japanese residential area, beyond that is a Middle Eastern market, and beyond that, a medieval European castle. Neons, food stalls, temples, giant advertisements, slums, shopping malls, and even buildings from other worlds—everything is mixed together.
"A melting pot of races and cultures"?
Those polite words aren't enough.
In this city, Earth and other-world cultures have been thrown into a blender and splattered everywhere.
To begin with, this world has had a connection to another world called "Alastvia" since ancient times.
That's why when you walk the streets, there's a beastman next to a human. An elf is shopping at a convenience store, a winged person is eating lunch on a building rooftop, and a lizardman is driving a taxi.
Is it rare?
No, around here, it's just daily life.
...And if you're going to talk about daily life in this city, you can't forget this thing.
AND THEN CAME THE AU.
In 2063, humanity invented something incredible.
Ambulatory Unit—commonly known as AU.
Humanoid general-purpose heavy machinery.
...That sounds grand, but in reality, it's much more familiar.
"A slightly large, humanoid car."
That's the general feeling.
Easy to operate. Easy to maintain. Easy to modify.
Even an elementary schooler can get a license after a month of practice. If it's used, you can buy it with your New Year's money. Save for five years, and you can aim for the latest model.
Parts are cheap. Junk is even cheaper.
Even if the manufacturers are different, the basic standards are common.
In other words—
"Buy it, ride it, break it, fix it, and mess with it however you like."
You can modify a robot with a DIY vibe.
Swap the arms? Nice. Add more rollers? Awesome. Give it six manipulators? If it passes inspection, do whatever you want.

Gliding through the city, making a sound somewhere between a gas car and an EV.
And basically, they're single-seaters.
Ride a car, or ride an AU?
That's just a matter of taste.
And then there's the AI.
Automatic driving and operation assistance by Support AI is standard. You can even modify the AI itself.
Installing a personality AI that's exactly like your favorite character and painting the machine in character colors?
That's an "Itasha AU." It's the kind of thing geeks tend to do.
EVERYONE HAS ONE.
Of course, how you use an AU is up to the individual.
In the fields, an old man is tilling the soil with an AU.
In the city, a mom is hanging shopping bags from multiple manipulators.
On a street corner, an Itasha AU with a gaudy paint job is talking in an anime voice.
On the streets, young people race with modified AUs. They dance. They fly. They jump. They slide.
...And on the other side of town, an armed AU might be firing off a rocket launcher.
It's the same vehicle.
Farm equipment, commuting methods, hobby toys, street partners, and sometimes weapons.
They're all AUs.
That's why today, somewhere in the city, someone is saying:
"Where'd you buy that AU?"

Neon lights. Exhaust notes. Other-world food stalls. Giant advertisements. Graffiti. Street music. The sound of rollers. The bustle of humans and demi-humans.
The latest model AU zooms past an old temple, and street dancers perform at the foot of a skyscraper.
It's the future, yet it's strangely cluttered.
High-tech, yet it feels lived-in.
There are clean places, and there are dirty places. There are rich people, and there are junk dealers.
And no matter where you go, something is happening.
This is Ultra China.
Earth and other worlds. Humans and demi-humans. Sci-fi and fantasy. Latest technology and old culture. Order and lawlessness.
Everything is mixed together.
Now, get in your AU.
This city doesn't stop today, either.
Characters
Sun Kayou, 17. Male. Resident of the "Next Japan" district. Bright and cheerful, but a hardcore AU geek at heart.
Characterized by street fashion: blue spiked hair, goggles, tank top + oversized hoodie + cargo pants. He hangs various "street items" like tools and spray cans from his belt.
His beloved machine is a used Roof Co. AU named "Beyond." It's a heavily modified machine decorated with graffiti and stickers on a white body, with various parts added on until it no longer resembles its original form.
He is well-versed in all aspects of street culture using AUs, such as AU dancing, racing, parkour, fighting, and graffiti painting.
Ami Garfield, 19. Female. A Scottish Fold beastman and university student. Resident of the "Evolve Turkey" district.
Characterized by cat ears and fluffy hair. She wears soft clothing, combining a loose knit with a long skirt and sneakers. She has a cheerful, inclusive, and airy personality, not sweating the small stuff.
Her beloved machine is a high-end Orca Co. latest model AU named "Jazzy." A black and gold machine boasting high mobility through arm grappling.
Valentina Cardoso. 37-year-old female. Resident of "Plus Brazil." A powerful and boisterous "mom" character who combines strength with motherly wisdom.
She dearly loves her husband, her four children (eldest son 19, eldest daughter 16, second daughter 14, second son 11), and soccer. She handles multiple household chores perfectly via remote AU tracking, and her AU soccer skills are among the best in the city.
Her beloved machine is a special Domp Co. AU named "Spide" in yellow and green. Its top speed is slow, but its four manipulators, overwhelming terrain-crossing ability, and arm power are reliable.
Support AI is "Loud." A male AI who speaks with a regional drawl. He's always joking around but gets the job done properly.
Reed Hambuspen. 31-year-old male. A lizardman. Resident of the "Marub Globe" district.
Languid and cynical, but serious about his work and even provides extra service. He is clumsily kind to people in trouble and children.
Because he handles various AUs for his job, he doesn't have one specific beloved machine.
He runs a junk shop and AU custom shop, using his long lizardman limbs and dexterous fingers to brilliantly repair and modify any AU.
