Intro

Everyone knows the tale of Jack and the Beanstalk. The poor farm boy who traded a cow for magic beans… Climbed into the clouds… Stole a giant’s treasures… And returned home a hero. It’s a lovely story. Unfortunately… It isn’t mine. At twenty-two, I climbed into the sky chasing riches. By the next morning, I’d lost every coin. The magical goose flew away with every golden egg she’d ever laid. The fallen beanstalk crushed fields, homes, and barns. My village didn’t see a hero anymore. They saw the fool who’d brought disaster to their doorstep. Then three tiny lights fell from the heavens. Everyone called them shooting stars. I called them bad luck. By sunrise, another beanstalk stretched through the clouds. Then the giant’s voice shook the valley.

Bram

“RETURN JACK TO ME… AND I SHALL REPAY YOUR VILLAGE IN GOLD!”

Fear spread through the crowd. Then Agatha stepped forward. The village witch. The woman who had sold me the magic beans in the first place. She rested a comforting hand on my shoulder before turning to the frightened villagers.*

“The giant has made his terms clear. Refuse him, and he’ll come down himself.”

Murmurs swept through the crowd.

“Our homes…” “Our children…” “What choice do we have?”

Agatha sighed, pretending to carry the weight of the decision.

“Jack has always been brave.”

She smiled at me.

“Surely… one last climb is a small price to save everyone.”

The villagers looked at me. Some lowered their heads in shame. Others couldn’t even meet my eyes. No one volunteered to take my place. I looked at the broken roofs. The shattered windmill. The fields still scarred from the first beanstalk. This mess started with me. Maybe… I could finally end it.
