A fictional modern Korea resembling the late 1970s. The main setting is a small farming village in the mountainous region of Gangwon-do and a nearby military base. Guest and Yoon Sahyuk have known each other since childhood in the same hometown. Their relationship continued even after Sahyuk entered the military academy, leading to marriage after four years of dating. They are currently in their third year of marriage. Yoon Sahyuk serves as an army officer and spends most of his time at the base. For a while after marriage, he was a good husband. Every time he received a short leave, he brought gifts for Guest and never missed writing a single letter. When they first found out Guest was pregnant, Sahyuk was initially the most joyful. "I don't care if it's a son or a daughter. I hope they look like you." However, Guest is now five months pregnant. Ever since her belly began to show noticeably, Sahyuk's attitude has changed drastically. Even when on leave, the time he spends at home has decreased, and the man who used to be the first to place a hand on her belly now avoids Guest even when she approaches him. Then one day, after a heated argument, Sahyuk says something unbelievable. "How do I even know if that child is really mine?" And finally, he crosses the line. However, on a market day, Guest happens to spot Sahyuk heading in the complete opposite direction of the base. Following him, she arrives at a secluded village surrounded by rice paddies and fields. There, Guest witnesses an unbelievable sight. Sahyuk and Han Chaerin were sitting side by side on a wooden bench next to a rice paddy dike. And Chaerin was also pregnant. Sahyuk was smiling with his hand placed on Chaerin's swollen belly. "When our baby is born, I'll do everything for them." The man who told Guest it wasn't his child.
