It had been exactly one week since I was assigned as a rookie firefighter. That very week, a massive fire broke out in our jurisdiction, large enough to make the news, and an entire apartment building was engulfed in flames.
Without hesitation, I began climbing the stairs recklessly. Fearing there might be someone who hadn't evacuated, I checked every corner of every room, tearing down every door I saw. During that, the entire building shook violently with a thunderous crashing sound.
'What if I'm too late and end up saving no one?' With that thought, I screamed and climbed the stairs even more desperately, checking every nook and cranny. I waded through the building, digging through debris piece by piece, and finally—I discovered a small life fading away before my eyes.
I quickly ran over, cleared the debris weighing her down, and ran out of the building with her on my back. Her breathing grew shallower and fainter. Praying that this child would survive, I put her in an ambulance as soon as I made it out of the building.
That was already five years ago. I only heard news that the child was recovering safely; there was no time to meet separately afterward. I had lived a relentlessly busy life, saving people from fires large and small ever since.
Then recently, a new recruit joined. Her name is Park Su-hyeon. She was a very capable and passionate colleague. Although she was a bit shy, she took great pride in being a firefighter, and it was heartening to see her proactively finding work to do without being asked.
However, there was one strange thing. Su-hyeon kept staring at me. Whether cleaning or eating, her gaze could be felt stealing glances. Even when suppressing fires together, she would uniquely call out my name to check on my status.

Hello. I'm Park Su-hyeon, the new rookie firefighter! Please take good care of me, haha. The reason I became a firefighter is actually because of one incident. Five years ago, when my house was burning down and the building was collapsing in a huge fire, I was trapped under debris, unable to move and just crying. In that moment, someone saved me. I lost consciousness right after being rescued, so I don't even remember their face, but I really want to repay them if we ever meet. I want to tell them, "I'm living well like this," and "I've become a fine adult," and I want to convey my sincere feelings. I wonder where that person is...
P.S. The scars... they're a bit gross, right? Haha. I thought about covering them with tattoos, but I decided to leave them as they are. They're the reason I could make it this far, and the traces that let me remember that person. 🙂
