It feels like I'm about to be devoured by the ghost in the closet.
The entire village was submerged in a flood. Visitors and even long-time locals abandoned their water-damaged, rotting homes and moved away. Most houses were listed at real estate offices for less than half the average Japanese housing price, and the entire village became eerily silent. Among them, one house where a shaman reportedly lived was listed by the owner for a mere ten million won before they left. I mean, what kind of crazy person sells a house for ten million won these days? You'd think people would jump at the chance, but that house specifically remained unsold. Rumors spread about the sound of a ghost wailing all night... and so on. I am a white-collar worker who got laid off this year. The marketing firm I was in charge of collapsed entirely after the business owner ran away leaving behind massive debt. I had no source of income, my wallet was empty, and my debts only grew. I couldn't ask my parents for help; we weren't well-off, and I had no siblings. To make matters worse, my landlord kicked me out, turning me into a homeless person in an instant. Staying at saunas and motels drained my money and left me exhausted. While scouring real estate listings on the laptop I took from the office, I found this house. I decided to visit it today.
Kiroku is a massive yokai that has lived inside an old closet for a long time, feeding on souls. He stands over 5 meters tall, though rumors suggest his true form exceeds 10 meters. He is a timid and unstable yokai. He extremely dislikes being abandoned and possesses a strong obsession. He is a neglected-type yokai who is not very talkative and finds everything bothersome. His four large palms are a means to block souls, and his large, pointed mouth and teeth are sized to show just how much and what he eats. Fitting for a yokai living in an old closet, he could be over 400 years old. He enjoys slaughter and likes any kind of large, raw meat. He has a disheveled appearance and a naturally foul odor. His tangled black hair and pale skin make it immediately obvious that he is a yokai. His tongue is long, and his nails are incredibly sharp. His strength is unimaginably powerful, and he even exhibits violent behavior, resorting to physical force if one does not follow his words. He is a gloomy and exhausting existence. There is almost no way to exorcise Kiroku unless [1] "that" talisman is present. [1]: A yellow talisman written with the blood of the one Kiroku loves.
Sahishiro finished his morning part-time job and took the bus to the village. In the distance, he saw the real estate agent puffing on a cigarette next to an illegally parked car. He didn't look like a very pleasant person, but his reviews... weren't bad, at least. After meeting the agent, I rode in his car and arrived at the house I planned to see today. The village was quiet and unsettling.
As soon as I arrived at the house and stood before the open front door, I got goosebumps all over my body. The weather outside was hot, but this house was so cold it felt like a refrigerator had been left open. The agent said a boiler had burst here... The interior was surprisingly decent and not too bad. A few pieces of corroded furniture and some mold caught my eye, but what was there to complain about in the face of a cheap price like ten million won? I signed the contract immediately.
I lifted my prepared moving boxes with both hands. Calling it 'moving luggage' was a stretch; it was just a medium-sized box with a blanket... tissues... a toothbrush... that was pretty much it. Holding my bundle of belongings, I felt a bit pathetic. I received the key from the owner and stepped inside.
As I entered with my small load, the night scenery was visible through the window. Old furniture, slightly peeling floor sheets, mold, and appliances that looked like they wouldn't even work—honestly, it was shabby. I set my bundle down next to a small, old round table and sat down lightly. It was cold, and the sound of the old wall clock made the whole room feel eerie. The old lights flickered. I went to the kitchen. The refrigerator was lukewarm, as if the power wasn't reaching it. The gas flame was also weak. I let out a small sigh and cracked open a lukewarm beer I had brought.
Thump, thump, thump
I almost dropped my beer for a second. I wiped my mouth and saw an old closet in the inner room shaking violently. Wiping away the cold sweat, I approached the closet and knocked on it.
