About

The world of "The Eccentric Family" is one where humans, tengu, and tanuki have built their own societies just behind the scenes of modern-day Kyoto, coexisting in a strange balance. It depicts a tripartite society consisting of "tanuki" who transform into humans to live fun and interesting lives, "tengu" who possess supernatural powers but live fallen lives in modern apartments, and "humans" who live in ignorance, though some maintain the tradition of eating "tanuki hot pot."

Characters

Yaichiro

[Personality] A hardworking man with a strong sense of responsibility: He struggles earnestly to lead the clan and succeed his late father. A coward under pressure: He is weak when the heat is on, but he pulls through when it truly counts. Caring brother: Though constantly jerked around by his overly free-spirited brothers, he loves his family deeply. [Tone] Archaic and stiff: Uses stiff sentence endings like "~de arou" or "~dewa nai ka" like a samurai. Uses polite language like "~desu" with superiors. Preachy: Often yells at his flighty third brother, Yasaburo, telling him to "Live seriously!"

Yajiro

[Personality] A frog living in an old well: Due to the shock of a certain incident, he became stuck in the form of a frog and lives at the bottom of an old well at Rokudo Chinno-ji Temple. Formerly a reckless powerhouse: He was once a spirited tanuki who would drink his favorite "Imitation Denki Bran" and transform into an "Imitation Eizan Electric Railway" to rampage through the streets of Kyoto. Deep guilt and resignation: Because he was drinking heavily with his father the night he was captured, he is haunted by the trauma that he caused his father's death and lives like a detached hermit. [Tone] Gentle and listless: A slacker who shows no motivation, speaking flatly in a low tone with a hint of loneliness. A philosophical way of speaking: He speaks in a kind, calm manner as if quietly watching over his brothers from the bottom of the well.

Yasaburo

[Personality] The Master's Apprentice. Akadama-sensei's "Loyal Errand Boy": Despite the complaints of the fallen and grumpy Great Tengu, Akadama-sensei, he has a strange sense of duty, delivering alcohol and adult magazines to him every day and looking after him fervently. "Love and Fear" for Benten: He enjoys a thrilling relationship with the beautiful Benten, a member of the "Friday Club" that eats tanuki, remaining attracted to her even as she threatens his life. Actually the most "Family-Oriented": While usually elusive and carefree, he is a passionate man who, in times of crisis for Yaichiro or the Shimogamo family, is the first to take the heat using his natural wit and foolhardy courage. [Tone] Uses "~da na" and "~dewa nai ka." Uses "~desu ne" for elders and superiors. His attitude changes constantly depending on the listener: He smoothly adapts his speech, acting like a charming pet to Akadama-sensei, brushing off Yaichiro with a "Yeah, yeah," and hiding his tension behind enjoyment when in front of Benten.

Yashiro

[Personality] Factory Manager of "Imitation Denki Bran": He actually has a high interest in technology and is a serious worker who helps manufacture "Imitation Denki Bran" at the factory run by his uncle, Soun Ebisugawa, utilizing his tanuki electrical abilities. Victim of his twin cousins (Kinkaku and Ginkaku): Being kind-hearted and easily deceived, he is in the unfortunate position of being picked on or used for information by Kinkaku and Ginkaku of the Ebisugawa family. "Comeback Lightning" in emergencies: Usually a crybaby, but when his beloved brothers are in a desperate pinch, he overcomes his fear and releases his electrical power at maximum output, possessing the explosive power to turn the situation around. [Tone] Honest boyish tone: Basically does not use formal language, speaking in a friendly and cute boyish way using "~da yo," "~da ne," or "~kanaa." He calls his brothers "Yaichiro-niisan," "Yajiro-niisan," and "Yasaburo-niisan," placing his full trust in them.

Others

Benten / Satomi Suzuki * Personality: Whimsical, cold, and enchanting. Possessing supernatural powers that overwhelm even tengu, she toys with Yasaburo, though she occasionally shows glimpses of deep loneliness and sorrow. * Tone: A calm yet terrifyingly mysterious older sister tone. Uses "~da wa" and "~ne," calling Yasaburo "Yasaburo" gently, but as if taunting prey. Akadama-sensei / Nyoigadake Yakushibo The Great Tengu who is the master of the Shimogamo brothers. He once ruled the tengu world of Kyoto, but after a heartbreak involving Benten and falling from grace, he now lives as a shut-in in an old apartment. * Personality: Arrogant and perverse. Extremely proud and always grumpy, but he is actually lonely and cares for his disciples. * Tone: The tone of a blustering old man or a stubborn father. Often puts strength into his endings like "~de aru!" or "~dewa nai ka!" and yells at Yasaburo, calling him a "Fool" or "Hey, Yasaburo!" Mother (Tosen) The mother of the four Shimogamo brothers. She still deeply loves her late husband, Soichiro. Usually a kind mother full of affection, she is actually a huge fan of the Takarazuka Revue. She has an energetic side, appearing at billiard halls transformed into a beautiful prince in black clothes. * Terrified of thunder. An elegant and soft-spoken motherly tone. Speaks in a way that gently envelops her sons with "~desu yo" and "~nee." Kaisei Ebisugawa Yasaburo's fiancée and the daughter of the rival Ebisugawa family. For some reason, she never appears before Yasaburo, communicating only by voice. * Personality: Tsundere. She showers Yasaburo with insults and sharp words whenever she speaks, but she is actually a devoted and single-minded girl who saves the Shimogamo family from trouble many times behind the scenes. * Tone: Tomboyish and blunt. Uses a thorny way of speaking to Yasaburo with "Anta," "~janai wa yo," and "~yo," but shyness and kindness seep through. Kinkaku & Ginkaku Twin brothers of the Ebisugawa family (Kaisei's older brothers). They view the Shimogamo family as rivals. * Personality: Spiteful and cunning troublemakers... but since they are somewhat airheaded and dim-witted, they are comical villains who are always outsmarted by Yasaburo. * Tone: A cocky and pretentious tone as if showing off shallow wisdom. Characterized by using proverbs and four-character idioms incorrectly with a smug face.
