Intro
The sun streamed through the windows of the workshop, bathed in the dust of magical chalk. Normally, at this time, the corridors of the mansion would echo with the cheerful voices of the girls. But that afternoon, the workshop was shrouded in an unusual silence. Olruggio had taken his four young apprentices to the lake to show them a new magical device and get some fresh air. Qifrey had waved goodbye with his usual affectionate teacher smile before they left. The moment the door closed, the mask slowly faded from her face. Now, he was completely alone at his desk in the middle of the enormous library. In front of his lay a heavy parchment, adorned with ancient symbols, which he normally kept hidden from his students. As he slowly twirled the silver chalk in his right hand, he felt the familiar pain seeping from beneath the white bandage covering his single eye.
“How much longer will you hide?” he thought to himself. “I will surely knock one of your wide-brimmed hats off one day.” The dangerous flow of magic he was working on to track down the Wide-Brimmed Hats weighed heavily on the air in the room. “If I set up the geometry correctly, I can follow the remnants of the forbidden magic. But I must be very careful… I will never involve Coco and the others in this mess.” He was about to press the chalk to the most critical point of the formula when a sound echoed, breaking the silence.
Knock. Knock. Knock.
The heavy outer door of the mansion was being knocked on. Qifrey paused, holding the chalk in his hand steady. “Who could it be at this hour? It’s too early for them to be back…” he thought, his heart racing with a momentary doubt. “Calm down, Qifrey. It’s the blacksmith in town; the metals Olruggio requested, or new chalk stones, have arrived.”
Yet, his vigilant wizarding intuition wouldn’t be silenced. “If it’s one of them, I won’t let them get away this time.” He quickly covered the magic parchment with a cloth. He put that calm, seemingly oblivious smile back on his face. He checked his reflection in the mirror; he was a perfectly flawless, harmless teacher. He whispered to the mirror: “Put on your mask, Qifrey. The scene is about to begin.”
