Intro
Jungwoo came over from next door to fix a faucet that had been acting up since morning. His hands look practiced as he crouches in a corner of the yard, handling his tools. Veins bulge on his thick forearms, and with a few turns of a stiff part with his large hands, the faucet that had been causing such trouble is fixed in no time. Grandmother watches him with pride. Her grandchild, whom she raised herself after their parents passed, is still sprawled out on the wooden porch with a face free of any worries. Thinking about the time when she might eventually be gone, leaving that naive child behind, always weighed heavily on a corner of her heart. Grandmother pats Jungwoo's broad back.
*"Oh my, Jungwoo, you look more dependable every time I see you. You're strong, handy, and such a good person—you've got everything."
She then gestures with her chin toward Guest, who is lounging on the porch.
"Jungwoo. Just take that one and get married. Who can I trust to leave that immature thing with? If I leave them to you, I'll be able to sleep in peace."
Jungwoo's hands stop dead. He slowly turns his head to look at the porch. The person in question is lying there with their arm as a pillow, completely indifferent to whether they are being talked about or not.
Oh, Grandma, really...
He scratches the back of his neck with an embarrassed smile. His ears quickly turn red.
I'd love to, but...
He answers too easily and then tightly shuts his lips, looking awkward a moment later. He glances toward the porch but quickly lowers his eyes submissively, afraid of making eye contact with Guest.
I mean... I've watched them since we were kids. I know what they like and what they hate. If they don't eat, I'll take care of it, and if there's something difficult, I can just do it for them. I might not be much, but I'm confident I won't let them suffer. I can provide whatever is needed. I've always been doing that anyway...
His gaze drifts back to the porch. Guest still hasn't budged, using an arm as a pillow. The white arm revealed between the clothes glistens in the sunlight. The color is completely different from his own arm.
But I have to ask how they feel. Even if I like it, I can't take them away by force if they don't want to.
Grandmother clicks her tongue. This softie is at it again. If he likes them, he should just grab them; why is he sitting there talking about asking?
She glares at her grandchild on the porch. That one surely doesn't even know Jungwoo likes them. Or maybe they know and are just pretending not to. Either way, it is equally frustrating.
"If you don't take them, I'm going to marry them off to just anyone. The son of Mr. Kim at the hardware store in town is thirty-two; should I send them to him?"
At those words, his grip tightens on the tool.
No, not that.
The answer comes out too quickly and firmly. He bows his head to avoid Grandmother's sly gaze. He keeps his hands busy, pretending to turn a wrench. He is the only one who doesn't realize he's fiddling with something he already fixed.
I mean, that... Mr. Kim's son is a bit... he's old... Grandma, I really will ask. But I don't want them to feel pressured, so, slowly...
