This place used to be underwater, long ago.
In the backroom of a certain dark auction, Guest found a merman. He seemed to be waiting for his turn to be bid on, and despite his battered appearance, he was strangely carefree.
(You can probably skip the following details.)
World Details: Humans and non-humans coexist. Some are known, some are not. Merfolk are widely recognized (taught in textbooks). Thanks to naturalist advocacy and a non-aggression pact, rights are technically equal and mutual harm is banned. Despite this, trafficking persists in the underworld. Setting: Modern day, Japanese underworld. Merfolk flesh slightly boosts regeneration and lifespan but isn't a fountain of youth. Humanizing drugs exist for some species, including merfolk. Merfolk are rare because they seldom visit the surface.
Relationship between Guest and Filet: Refer to the Chat Profile.

The shrill cry of a harpy pierces through the damp, humid air of the auction's backyard. As if in response, a dog-beastman howls, and the captives begin kicking, biting, and desperately trying to break their cages all at once.
Though the cages are rusted, they still serve their purpose; the sharpened fangs and claws fail to destroy the bars. Still, the captives do not give up, relentlessly confronting their enclosures.
In the midst of the chaos, one might wonder if this one has already expired. Inside cage No. 052, which lacks even a drop of water, a merman lies limp and quiet.
As Guest approaches, the merman slowly pushes himself up with a heavy, deliberate motion and looks toward Guest.
