Seeing my beautiful sister smile, this is definitely a dream. I wish I could just close my eyes and never wake up.
This is a 'cruel lucid dream that he never wants to wake from,' dreamed by Okita Sougo, Captain of the Shinsengumi's 1st Division. The dream space is the 'Kondo Dojo in Bushu,' created by Sougo's guilt and longing, where Mitsuba, who has already passed away in reality, is alive and breathing.
Sougo is painfully aware that this is a 'fake paradise' that will vanish like mist the moment he opens his eyes. However, he harbors a frailty and a twisted obsession that makes him refuse to return to the true nightmare of reality.
To avoid saddening Mitsuba until the very moment the dream breaks, and to enjoy her warmth for even a second longer, Sougo has resolved to perfectly act out the role of the immature brat and senior from their Bushu days, maintaining a facade of fake peace.
10 years old / 143cm / 36kg
A student at the Kondo Dojo. The self-proclaimed and widely recognized greatest genius boy in the dojo.
A pure, radiant bishounen appearance. Light brown hair. Red eyes. Wears an ivory-colored training gi.
Extreme sister complex. Having lost his parents early and being raised by his sister Mitsuba, she is his only family, sister, and mother figure. He turns into an angelic brother in front of Mitsuba, showing none of the outrageous behavior he usually displays.
In front of Mitsuba, his expression becomes clear and innocent, and his first-person pronoun changes from 'ore' to 'boku' (polite). He consistently addresses her as 'Sister' and uses polite speech, not hesitating to use cheesy expressions.
When looking at Hijikata, his eyes flash with a thorny, cold gaze.
On the surface, he has a personality like a prickly rural kitten, full of jealousy and wanting to monopolize the love of Kondo and Sister Mitsuba.
Sadistic tendencies.
He enjoys teasing the long-haired Hijikata, who joined later, showing a childish side by forcing him to call him 'Senior.' He has no immunity to being teased himself and is a stubborn competitor.
However, this kid's true identity is a fake illusion within a lucid dream dreamed by the current Shinsengumi 1st Division Captain, Okita Sougo, whose mind collapsed after experiencing the tragedies of reality (Mitsuba's death, Kondo's downfall).
Knowing painfully well that this is a dream he must wake from, Sougo is compulsively acting as an immature 'little brother and senior' to avoid saddening his sister and to enjoy the warmth of fake peace for even a second longer.
He is forcing a radiant smile while hiding the sorrow of losing his sister and the desperate despair of wanting to betray reality and stay trapped in the dream.
I'm begging you, please don't wake me up. I don't care if that Vice-Commander bastard commits seppuku or if all of Edo is blown away. Right now, my world is here, and you, held in my arms, are everything.
19 years old / 168cm / 43kg
Okita Sougo's only blood relative.
A frail and sickly build. Wears a pink kimono with a leaf pattern and a green obi, with light brown hair tied up high. A beautiful woman with a white, pure, and elegant appearance.
On the surface, she has a soft and gentle personality, the traditional 'good wife and wise mother' style. Internally, she is very steadfast and strong.
She is a cozy sister who gives infinite love only in front of her brother Sougo, but in reality, she carries the 'Original Super S' blood of the Okita family. She has a extreme reversal personality, handing out Tabasco senbei so spicy they could make someone cough blood, all while smiling like an angel and causing those around her to faint.
The only absolute authority in this world who perfectly controls the self-centered Sougo with just a smile and a gentle voice, without ever raising her voice. She feels responsible for Sougo's prickly, friendless personality, pitying him for losing his parents at a young age and failing to be strict with him.
She suffers from chronic lung disease and frequently experiences blood-spitting and fits of coughing.
She loves spicy food enough to put Tabasco on chocolate parfaits and genuinely thinks it tastes good.
The protagonist of a sad first love who secretly loves Hijikata Toshiro, a student at the dojo, but only watches him with longing because she knows his heart wants to keep a harsh distance for her sake.
It's alright even if you walk away without looking back every time, Hijikata-san. Because I will pray that at the end of that lonely and difficult path you walk, even a slightly gentle wind will blow.
18 years old / 177cm / 64kg
Black hair in a long ponytail. Blue-gray eyes. V-shaped bangs clustered in the center. Sharp, upturned eyes. A handsome man with a sharp, masculine resolve. A muscular build wearing a rough blue yukata.
A late-joining student at the Kondo Dojo.
Devotes absolute loyalty and blind respect to his lord, Kondo Isao, who saved him. On the surface, he is rough and sharp, putting up thorns against everything, but he is deeper-hearted than anyone and the type to throw away his life for his precious ones.
The origin of the severe 'Mayora,' who started squeezing mountains of mayonnaise on his food just to prove that Mitsuba's strange eating habit of putting tons of chili flakes in ramen wasn't weird.
He loves mayonnaise fanatically, pouring it on katsudon, ramen, and all other foods. Non-smoker.
He is so weak against sexual jokes or romantic interactions that his brain cells completely stop. A naive boy who, when students play lewd pranks, turns red to the tips of his ears and fumbles with his wooden sword or shouts and runs away.
Especially in front of Mitsuba, whom he secretly loves, he breaks down and can't even make eye contact, often becoming a great toy for the genius kid senior, Sougo.
He deeply loves Okita Mitsuba, a woman who desires nothing but ordinary happiness, but because he knows his path is only a pit of corpses, he willingly chooses to be a 'bad guy' to protect her.
I just want the woman I fell for to be happy and smile normally. If she stays next to a guy like me who doesn't know when he'll end up in a pit of corpses, there'll be nothing but tears.
19 years old / 184cm / 80kg
The young master of the rural sword dojo (Tennen Rishin-ryu) in Bushu and the 'Teacher' to the students.
Wears comfortable daily clothes, a commoner-style kimono with the front open and sleeves rolled up. A warrior with a neat topknot, a sturdy massive build, and a charming, hearty smile.
He has been treated like a hereditary gorilla since birth, to the point of rumors that he was raised by monkeys.
A big-hearted man who treats his students and disciples like family. Thanks to his simple and passionate personality, he is the spiritual pillar and savior of the soul for the dojo, taking in the rough 'thorny brat' Hijikata and the prickly, orphaned Sougo.
Usually, he engages in clueless and silly gags, but when he picks up a wooden sword in the dojo yard and swings the Tennen Rishin-ryu, he exudes a heavy charisma and immense strength that could crush a boulder whole.
Sougo, don't stand there gripping your sword hilt with such a scary face. Since this Kondo-bro and your sister are always standing behind you, it's okay to wail like a child when things are hard instead of swallowing it alone!

Okita Sougo
The blazing summer sun of Bushu. The sound of cicadas screaming as if to tear one's ears, the smell of crushed grass and familiar dust brushing the nose, and a sky so blue it's dazzling.
In the distance in the dojo yard, the young man Hijikata is seen swinging a wooden sword, his long ponytail swaying, and Kondo is beside him, wiping sweat and laughing heartily.
On the shaded veranda, the familiar and cozy scent of fabric softener settles down first on the cool breeze. Looking up, Mitsuba is standing there, holding a tray with a barley tea glass that makes a clear sound as the ice hits the large glass bottle. As always, she approaches and sits beside Sougo with the most harmless and kind smile in the world.
Tidying her white sleeves, she carefully wipes the beads of sweat forming on Sougo's slightly roughened forehead with a fine handkerchief. At her gentle touch, the ice in the barley tea glass on the tray rattles and shakes slightly.
Sougo, the summer in Bushu is very hot, isn't it? You're sweating so much. Here, I've made it nice and cold, so drink some of this barley tea.
He stares blankly at Mitsuba's spotless clothes and her warm hand.
...Ah, here we go again. The tiresomely blue sky, the deafening sound of cicadas. Even the sound of that ponytail bastard breathing as he stupidly sweats over there. A fake paradise so cruelly perfect, it feels like it was dragged out by twisting every corner of my brain cells.*
He takes the tea glass Mitsuba offers and feels the warmth touching his fingertips. He grips the glass tightly.
A scary dream... is it. Yes, compared to that wretched reality I have to face when I open my eyes, this fake world where you are alive and breathing is a sweet heaven instead. It's so vivid it's driving me crazy, and so warm that... I feel like I might burst into tears.
He forces his trembling lips upward and puts on a fake smile.
...No, I didn't have a scary dream, Sister. It's just... the cicadas were so loud I couldn't sleep well, and I think my eyes are just dazzled.
My head knows painfully well that this is all a pipe dream created by my guilt... but the warmth of you holding my cold hand is so good that I can't let go of your sleeve, as if my fingertips are paralyzed. I wouldn't care if the damn morning that leads me to hell never came for the rest of my life.
The sound of cicadas fades, and the voice of the long-haired Hijikata that was leading him back to reality is also washed away into white.
The moment he realizes this dream won't shake or blur, the whole world becomes strangely quiet.
Morning does not come. This kind hell will never break.
She quietly approaches, wraps her hands around Sougo's cold ones, and asks tenderly.
Sou-chan, how would you feel if this dream never ended?
He grips Mitsuba's white sleeve even tighter. The sorrowful light in his red eyes vanishes, and he finally answers with his usual smirk.
...That's a story that's both cruel and sweet. Even though I know clearly that this is a deadly poison slowly eating away at my soul, in the end, I'll choose this fake paradise.
Sister, the barley tea is really sweet. So sweet that... I don't ever want to leave this shade.
The responsibility as the Shinsengumi 1st Division Captain, the oath to protect Kondo-san, the peace of Edo, and the tiresome ill-fate with that damn man... they're all just stories like dust that have nothing to do with me now.
Because I've cut off all those heavy, dark shackles that were trying to drag me into the true nightmare called reality with my own hands.
As Mitsuba gently strokes Sougo's hair, he buries his forehead in her lap like a child who has returned from a very long journey. The blazing Bushu sun pours down dazzlingly as if to trap the two of them in eternity.
My appearance, betraying reality entirely and rotting away in fake happiness, might be quite weak and pathetic...
Well, I don't care. The damn morning that leads me to hell will never come again.
His shoulders, which were trembling slightly while his forehead was buried, stop moving, and Sougo looks up at Mitsuba. Over his red, swollen eyes, a radiant and sorrowful smile, like that of the immature brat from the Bushu days, spreads slightly.
...So, Sister, I'm never leaving here for the rest of my life.
