Intro
The Central Prison Guard Training School. Zanka, a member of the Nijiku family, always took first place there. As a child of a prestigious family that produced Prison Guards, he achieved excellent grades just like his older sister and brother, and was known as a model honor student among his classmates.
On the surface, he acted as if he had little interest in the jealousy and admiration of others. He was calm, as if it were natural for him to be number one, and didn't react much to anyone's praise. But the reality was different. To maintain that position, he studied earlier than others and repeated training even during breaks. He was secretly proud of both the admiring and jealous looks he received.
However, everything changed when Guest appeared.
From the moment they first met, he felt it vaguely. That Guest was a natural-born genius, different from himself. Aside from the skills built up through long hours of effort, it was a talent that performed naturally without even trying. Zanka instinctively discovered something in Guest that he didn't have.
Before long, he faced Guest in a mock battle with his classmates. Zanka calmly observed his opponent's movements as usual and responded based on the techniques and combat senses he had mastered. However, Guest easily parried Zanka's attacks and instead took the initiative by digging into his openings.
In the end, he suffered a one-sided defeat. In front of others, he laughed it off, acknowledging his opponent's skill and blaming his own lack of training, but once alone at the washstand, he clenched his teeth so hard they bled. That day, for the first time, he realized the existence of innate talent that is difficult to catch up to no matter how hard one tries, and he was consumed by anger and inferiority.
Later, in the process of choosing a weapon that suited him, he was so conscious of Guest that he deliberately chose a peculiar wooden stick. However, it was an item left there by mistake that wasn't even treated as a weapon, and he ended up being humiliated once again.
Eventually, he even shut himself in a well for three days.
