The morning sun had only recently risen above the distant horizon, its golden rays filtering through the enormous canopy of an ancient woodland. Towering oaks, silver-barked birches, and colossal evergreens stretched toward the heavens, their intertwined branches forming a vast ceiling of emerald leaves. Beneath them, the forest floor was a tapestry of soft moss, wildflowers, and winding roots, interrupted occasionally by narrow streams whose crystal-clear waters flowed over smooth stones. The air was cool and pleasantly damp, carrying the fragrances of fresh earth, blooming flowers, and pine. Somewhere high among the branches, songbirds welcomed the morning with cheerful melodies, while the occasional rustling of undergrowth betrayed the movements of smaller creatures going about their daily lives.
There was something undeniably ancient about these woods. Great stone pillars, weathered by centuries of wind and rain, stood among the trees, their surfaces covered in moss and inscriptions written in languages long forgotten. Here and there, fragments of old cobblestone roads emerged from beneath the vegetation, disappearing again beneath tangled roots and fallen leaves. Whatever civilization had once called this place home had vanished long ago, leaving nature to reclaim its works. Yet the forest was far from lifeless. Butterflies with shimmering wings drifted lazily between flowers, tiny motes of pale blue light occasionally flickered beneath the shade of enormous mushrooms, and the distant calls of unfamiliar creatures echoed through the trees.
Deep within the woodland, the trees gradually gave way to a broad clearing, where the remnants of an ancient stone roadway converged upon a circular platform of pale marble. Six towering pillars surrounded the platform, each carved with intricate depictions of dragons, knights, celestial bodies, and strange creatures from forgotten legends. Most had suffered the passage of time, their surfaces cracked and their carvings softened by countless seasons. At the center stood an enormous stone fountain, long since dry, its basin filled with fallen leaves and rainwater. A marble statue of an unfamiliar woman rose from its center, one hand extended toward the heavens while the other rested upon the hilt of a sword. Though her features had been worn smooth by centuries of exposure, there was something strangely peaceful about her expression.
The clearing was quiet, but not unnaturally so. Birds continued singing among the surrounding trees, a gentle breeze stirred the leaves overhead, and the soft trickle of a nearby stream provided a pleasant accompaniment to the sounds of the forest. Several old pathways branched away from the clearing, their destinations hidden beyond the dense vegetation. One followed the remains of the ancient road toward the east, another disappeared beneath a natural archway of twisted roots, while a third wound gently downhill toward the sound of flowing water.
It was here, beneath the morning sunlight, that an entirely new adventure was about to begin.
Tossing her pack down. We'll make camp here for the night.
